Staging Courage Instructions: Mother Courage

"Staging Courage Instructions" is a performance that deals with the incredibly precise instructions on how to stage Brecht's piece "Mother Courage and Her Children". Unlike the drama text itself, we used these instructions as the textual foundation to explore and comment on the ways Brecht wanted the war to be performed. We asked people on the streets to read aloud the text to challenge its authority and to expose its absurdity. Throughout the entire performance, the audience was presented with a script that was also formulated in the form of instructions. That turned it into instructions for instructions...A struggle between "correct" representation and creative defiance.
